My deceased mother cried tears in front of me at age 10 when she realized her error was to reject her father's trying to teach her Spanish. Her AA mother couldnt teach her, and now her Papa was gone! B'cuz of her error, I had to become bilingual on my own, for which my mother actually "THANKED ME." If one generation loses the language, usually its gone FOREVER!
We grew up with "Que Pasa USA" , I was carmensita, my brother was Joe.. my best friend were Sharon( la gringa) and Violeta ( cubanita) . My parents were like carmensitas parents. And we also had the Abuela in the house , no abuelo. That was the best show on TV in the 70s . There were a cuban family and they will speak Spanglish all the time. But in my home there was no spanglish permitted only spanish at home or else….THE CHANCLETA WILL BE FLYING ACROSS THE ROOM. 😅😅😅
